WordPress 2.8 is available to download today

The first public beta of WordPress 2.8 is available to download today. You are invited to install it, test it, and report bugs for the improvements.

There are lots of new features included in this release, some of them are:

* New Theme Installer routines
* Add CodePress syntax highlighting to Theme and Plugin editors
* Separate Comments into a separate postbox, from Discussion postbox, on the Edit Post screen
* Allow the dashboard widgets to be arranged in up to four columns as set via the Screen Options tab
* Don’t ask for confirmation when marking a comment as spam
* Don’t notify post author of own comments
* Improved Admin icons (grey-to-transparent shadows)
* Improved Widget user interface
* Improved Plugin search
* Autosave post/page when pressing Control/Command+S
* More …
